Introduction by Peter Westgarth, Chief Executive

Over the years we have had consistent feedback that tells us that participation in the DofE programme develops skills, fitness, a sense of adventure and community responsibility. So, we at the Award don’t need to be convinced of its value.

However, we can’t expect those outside of the DofE just to take our word for it. We need to find out exactly what the real benefits are, what is good about the programme, and what could be improved. We can then build on this knowledge to make the Award even more successful.

Therefore, I am delighted to announce that an evaluation of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has been commissioned. This evaluation has been funded by The Pears Foundation and will be undertaken by the Centre for Children and Youth at The University of Northampton.

There will be several strands to this work. The researchers will look in-depth at young people’s experiences of taking part in the Award. Surveys will go out to everyone who leads the Award on why they believe the Award works. We’ll also find out the long lasting effects of doing the Award, by interviewing past participants from the last 50 years. And, a series of on-line surveys will see how the skills, experiences, expectations and aspirations of current Award participants change over a 12-month period.

The first survey is attached here. Please complete it as honestly as you can – every opinion will make a difference. And, as an incentive, we have included the chance to win an Apple iPod Touch.

Good luck in your Award and thank you for helping us.
